Inside Summer

One of the best ways to spend a Phoenix summer is to hunker down, close the shades, and get caught up on all the shows you haven’t seen because you were outside playing. While many others do that during snowy winters, Phoenicians can beat the heat by staying cool and planning an inside summer. If you need a break from your space or the streaming services, here are some other family-friendly indoor activities you can sprinkle into your summer plans.

For date night, check out the immersive experience at UnderTow. This underground tiki bar may be the change of scenery you need. It’s popular, so call ahead to make reservations.

Head to the bookstores. Changing Hands Bookstore is a family favorite. You can browse the stacks in a calm, cool atmosphere. They have a wide range of events, including trivia night, story time, author talks and book signings, so check out their website to plan the day that best suits you. Your kids can get involved in the Summer Reading Bingo and the Phoenix location has a book bar just for mom and dad. And don’t forget your local library!

There are several indoor rock climbing gyms around town. There’s ClimbMax and Phoenix Rock Gym in Tempe, Ape Index in Peoria, and AZ on the Rocks in Scottsdale. Rock climbing is a great way to move your body or watch your kids get some of their energy out while beating the heat. Don’t worry if you don’t have gear. Most gyms have a day pass and rental option for you.

If high-energy bodies need to move, Phoenix has a variety of indoor playgrounds to explore. Uptown Jungle Fun Park, for example, has locations around the valley. You’ll probably want to call ahead and take advantage of the off-peak hours.

Ice skating in the summer? Yes, Phoenix has three different ice arenas around the valley. You can rent skates and beat the heat on the ice this summer. If ice skating is not your thing, you can always go roller skating. Enjoy a roll around the rink, arcade games, fun music, and a bite to eat.

Wonderspaces Arizona has immersive and interactive art installations from around the world. This isn’t your boring museum! This may also be another great date night activity for parents who need a few hours to reconnect with each other this summer.

The Valley has so much to offer and with a little planning, you can play outside and inside, try something new, and revisit old favorites. Share below if you have a favorite thing to do in Phoenix during the summer.
