Next to Thanksgiving, the 4th of July is one of my all time favorite holidays. I love that it is so family oriented and is an enjoyable holiday at any age.
My favorite memory of the 4th of July is when I was in elementary school, (before I got to the pre-teen “I don’t want to do anything with my family” age). Every 4th we would head over to my grandparents’ house and have an early BBQ with family and close friends, followed by a short walk to a park on a lagoon, where we would put out blankets and dig into a delicious desert while we waited for the fireworks show. The desert was ALWAYS angel food cake with cool-whip, strawberries, and blueberries. . . still to this day one of my favorites. We would watch the fireworks show, and then my grandfather would surprise us with poppers. The poppers you throw on the ground, that make a loud cracking noise. We would proceed to crack them all as we walked home.
It’s memories like these that make me conscious of how we celebrate with my son, and I want so badly to instill these traditions in him. What better place to start building memories than with the food for your 4th of July BBQ? Here’s a round up of several recipes to make your BBQ a memorable one.
