The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends the first dental visit by age one, and continued routine dental visits every six months for cleanings and evaluations. Oral Hygiene
A proper home dental hygiene routine is key in preventing tooth decay, which can lead to pain. We recommend brushing morning and night, flossing every night before bed, drinking plenty of water, and choosing healthy snacks over sugary choices when you can.

Regular dental visits not only include professional cleanings and exams, but can also include these preventative measures:
- Dental Sealants – the application of dental sealants offers an extra layer of protection against cavities. These are applied to the molars, which have deep pits and grooves that make it easier for food to stick and cause decay.
- Fluoride Treatment – fluoride strengthens and protects teeth and can be applied after a dental cleaning.
Nutrition
Sugar and carbohydrates, combined with bacteria in the mouth, produce acids that over time can lead to cavities and periodontal disease. Limit your child’s consumption of sugary foods and drinks. Wash down snacks that stick to the teeth with water. Choose snacks that help clean the teeth like apples, carrots and celery. Offer snacks and meals on a regular schedule and avoid grazing throughout the day whenever possible.
