Maya Angelou, one of my favorite writers, encouraged us to “be a rainbow in someone else’s cloud.” With all the heaviness, dark feelings, and divisiveness our country is facing, maybe this is the perfect time to challenge ourselves to participate in World Kindness Day, which takes place on Wednesday, November 13. This day reminds us to pause and think about how we can make a difference in our corner of the world.
Many people are scared right now, unsure of what the future holds. Hold space for them—love, encourage, and listen. Don’t be dismissive. Open your hearts and see the individual beauty each person possesses. If you need to cry, let it out. Lend a shoulder. Make a meal for a single mom, babysit her kids for free, or put together care packages for those serving overseas or away at college. Volunteer to help those less fortunate. If you have a skill, share it with no other intention than to show care and respect for others.
Cheer on kids at school events, take them for ice cream, or visit with older people and learn from their stories. Volunteer at an animal shelter or cuddle babies in the NICU. Help take out your neighbor’s trash bins or run an errand for them. Gather around the table and find moments of peace, laughter, and appreciation for one another. Call your loved ones. Write a letter of gratitude to someone who comes to mind, and include a small treat. Say “thank you,” “I appreciate you,” “You are wonderful!”
See people’s hearts—they may surprise you with their beautiful intentions and kindness. May this day offer a load off your shoulders, bring rest to your weary soul, and set your spirit in a place of thanksgiving and gratitude for the many blessings we have and can bestow on others.
PS I would love to know how you challenged yourself to show others kindness/how you felt being a recipient!
