As a parent in Arizona, we are facing some interesting times right now. Schools shutting down, teachers walking out, families faced with tough decisions in their daily life. I’m very thankful this doesn’t affect my day-to-day living but for some, I’m sure it’s a complete mess. No matter what “side” you’re on, (maybe one day I’ll rant about how much I’m over the dual partisans), the future of education affects all of us.
One thing that I have enjoyed seeing as a response to #redfored is the way the community has come together here in Phoenix. I can only comment on what I have seen in my city, but it is my sincere hope that other areas of Arizona are experiencing the same thing. Schools, businesses, churches, and nonprofits all stepping up to answer one question …
“How can we help?”
When some families had no idea where their children would go because they HAD to go work, these organizations came together and answered that question with free or discounted camps or childcare. When some children RELY on the breakfast and lunch they get at school (for some, very likely their only meals of the day), these organizations answered that question by providing.
I am so very proud of my city and my community. I’m proud to be a part of this moment in time. The outpouring of support, from where I stand, is mind-blowing. Even in my tiny school’s community, we helped answer these questions for families who needed help.
Even though each day is an unknown, I am happy to look at the good that is shining through. No matter the situation, there is always good … sometimes we just need to dig deeper to see it.
It takes a village, and this is playing out right before our eyes.
