As a yoga instructor and someone who is pretty into health and fitness, I feel a bit ashamed to say that I have never included meditation in my wellness routine. The recent studies on the benefits of meditation are tremendous (reduced stress, better sleep, and increased happiness … just to name a few) so itโ€™s been on my list to establish a regular routine. Iโ€™ve certainly tried to meditate at home, but between a work from home business, two dogs, and a precocious toddler it just doesnโ€™t seem to work.

Meditation

When I was offered the chance to try a class at Current Meditation Studio in Arcadia, I jumped at the opportunity! I was hopeful it would help me experience meditation in a new light, as it was founded by two families with a goal to create a meditation space that is approachable and authentic.

When I walked in, I was immediately calmed by the clean, inviting space. The front desk staff was friendly, and helped assuage my nervousness by preemptively answering some questions I had…like, โ€œWhat do I do if I canโ€™t sit still?โ€ or, โ€œWhat happens if I fall asleep?โ€ (P.S. the answers are … itโ€™s okay if either happens!)

Meditation

I put my belongings in one of the complimentary lockers and headed into the classroom. I picked their signature 45-minute aerial class, where you get to relax in a silk hammock and are guided through meditation with sound from crystal bowls and a gong. There were a few other first-time clients as well, so Hamid (our instructor) helped us get settled into the hammocks. The hammock was awesome! Silky and cozy. I felt like I was being swaddled. If youโ€™re pregnant, the hammock is a nice option because you can lay on your side, be weightless and actually stay comfortable!

Meditation

Hamid started class with an intention setting, and then led us through some visualization and imagery exercises that helped quiet my mind. Once we were settled, he alternated between different forms of sound and music, plus continuing to speak and guide us throughout class with a little breath work as well. I appreciated this, because Iโ€™ve gone to meditation classes before where you are in a quiet room the whole time, and I could never get my racing mind to slow down. This time, I was actually able to follow along and (mostly) stay present.

After class, the instructor sits by the tea corner to talk to students about their experience, or answer any questions that may have come up during meditation. I chatted for a bit and grabbed some chamomile tea. I felt grounded and refreshed. Once I went home I took a quick shower and went straight to bed, where I fell into a deep sleep! This was huge for me because I’ve always been such a restless sleeper, and it was cool to see an immediate physical benefit from the meditation.

Meditation

Overall, it was an amazing experience and I canโ€™t wait to go back. I loved the innovative and practical approach to meditation and found that it was a realistic way to incorporate meditation into my life. I also loved that there are different class package and membership options so you can find the best fit for your schedule. Similar to most things in life, the more you practice meditation the easier it gets as your brain physically rewires itself through a process called neuroplasticity! As a mom who is constantly trying to โ€œstay in the present momentโ€ instead of worrying about my never-ending to-do list, this was an easy way to exercise and expand my mind. As an added bonus, it felt like a luxurious and restful form of self-care (which all of us mamas need more of, am I right?!).

Current Meditation offers all new guests the chance to experience their first class for free, along with a membership package to make meditation convenient, accessible and affordable. Experience meditation for the modern world and sign up for your complimentary class here.  To learn more about Current Meditation, or to book a class, please visit www.becurrent.com.

To top off this incredible experience, Current Meditation has generously decided to give away a swag bag to one of our lucky mamas!  It includes a water bottle, journal, and a 4-pack of Current Meditation Classes (total value of $145!).
