Celebrate Dad without Maxing-out Mom

0

May is often a busy month for moms. If you have school-aged children, May is filled with end-of-year assignments, performances, sports, and teacher appreciation celebrations. Add to that researching, planning, and signing up for summer activities and moms may be out of steam to celebrate Dad on Father’s Day. It is another event that they need to plan for and execute, which also may include thinking of a meaningful gift or coordinating with children and other family members. And, for some families, Father’s Day is complicated, adding to the emotional load moms carry. In Phoenix, in particular, triple-digit temperatures in mid-June can make it challenging to celebrate Father’s Day with the classic outdoor picnic/grill experience. So, how can we celebrate dads without making significantly more work for moms? Here are some fun ideas to explore and get your own creative wheels turning.

For Thrill-Seeking Dads

Phoenix has some great activities for Dads who want a little adventure on Father’s Day weekend. There are multiple locations to go Axe Throwing around Phoenix and Scottsdale. Do they love to drive – check out High-Speed Kart Racing. You can also check out the Firebird Motorsports Park for Midnight Madness and the Go Fast Drift and Drag Event, where they can watch races or participate if so inclined. iFly, an indoor skydiving experience can give Dad the chance to fly! If you don’t want to go, connect with some other families and get a group of dads together for these thrill-seeking activities. Polaris Adventures is also a fun idea with many Arizona locations to choose from!

Sporty or Outdoorsy Dads

With nearly 200 golf courses to choose from, there’s sure to be a Phoenix golf course that Dad hasn’t yet tried. In June, some courses offer early morning tee times or glow golf after sunset to help beat the heat. Not into golf, you can also pack the sunshade and head just outside the Valley to go fishing. Arizona has many State Parks that may have the right combination for a Father’s Day celebration. If you want to make a weekend out of it in Flagstaff, check out the Extreme Adventure Course.   And in the Valley, places like Butterfly Wonderland or the Desert Botanical Gardens have special Father’s Day deals.

Foody Dads

Phoenix and Scottsdale have some amazing dining options to choose from and celebrate Dad. See if his favorite restaurant has a Father’s Day special, try something new, or splurge on a new experience. Spice it up a little by taking a Segway to your favorite restaurant!

While you are making decisions about how (or if) you celebrate, remember to consider your own energy levels. Dad can be celebrated without it taking a toll on Mom. There’s also delight in the simple pleasures, like sleeping in, catching a movie, or having an ice cream on a warm day. Please share other ideas for celebrating Dad below.
